Formula
Required exam score = (desired grade − current grade × (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight.
Worked example
With a 90% current grade, a final worth 40%, and an 85% target, the required exam score is 77.5%.
Common mistake
The current grade should represent completed work only. The final exam weight is its percentage of the whole course grade, not a percentage of the remaining points.
When to use it
Set a realistic exam target or check whether an overall course goal is still reachable.
